Looking to get Tongue & Lip tie assessed?

A tongue tie (ankyloglossia) or lip tie occurs when the thin band of tissue (called the frenum) under the tongue or upper lip is too tight, short, or thick. This can restrict normal movement of the tongue or lip, affecting your child’s ability to breastfeed, speak, chew, or swallow properly.

At Giggles & Grins, we take a functional approach to diagnosing and managing tongue and lip ties. Our assessment goes beyond appearance—we evaluate how the tie affects your child’s feeding, oral development, speech, and airway.

When needed, a gentle and precise frenectomy procedure can be performed to release the restriction. This is often followed by oral exercises to help your child achieve proper muscle function and coordination.

A life saver for our toddler-Highly recommend Dr. Padminee! I cannot thank Dr. Padminee enough for the care and clarity she provided during a very stressful time for our family. Its now been 4 months since we followed her advice and we have successfully managed to contain the spread of cavities while still continuing to breastfeed.

I am forever grateful to Dr. Padminee at Giggles and Grins chennai for helping my son with his tongue tie and lip tie release. Their holistic approach, which includes relaxing the tongue and oral stretches before the procedure is truly impressive. Thanks to her, I am now able to exclusively breastfeed my baby.

When do you need lip and tongue tie surgery?

Not every tongue tie or lip tie needs surgery. Many children have mild restrictions that don’t interfere with normal function.
A frenectomy (tongue or lip tie release) is considered only when the tie affects important daily functions such as:

  • Feeding difficulties – trouble breastfeeding, prolonged feeding times, clicking sounds while nursing, poor weight gain, or maternal nipple pain.

  • Speech concerns – unclear pronunciation, difficulty saying certain sounds, or restricted tongue movement noticed during speech development.

  • Dental or oral issues – spacing between front teeth, gum recession, or difficulty maintaining oral hygiene due to tight frenum attachment.

  • Swallowing or chewing problems – messy eating, preference for soft foods, or poor tongue coordination.

  • Airway and sleep issues – mouth breathing, snoring, or sleep-disordered breathing related to restricted tongue posture.

FAQ

The frenectomy procedure is quick and minimally invasive. We use gentle techniques and ensure your child’s comfort throughout. Infants usually feed immediately after the release, and older children experience only mild soreness that settles within a day or two.
