Dental Trauma in Children: What Every Parent Should Know!

Accidents happen—and when they involve your child’s teeth, it can be both scary and confusing. Dental trauma refers to any injury to the teeth, gums, lips, or surrounding oral structures, usually caused by falls, sports injuries, or sudden impact to the face.

At Giggles & Grins Kids Dental Clinic, we specialize in handling pediatric dental emergencies with calm, kid-friendly care. Whether it’s a chipped tooth, a knocked-out baby tooth, or a fractured permanent tooth, timely evaluation and treatment can make a big difference.

We understand that children’s dental injuries are unique. Their teeth, jaw growth, and bite need special attention—not just a quick fix. Our airway-focused, function-first approach ensures not only recovery, but long-term oral health, aesthetics, and function.

Immediate Steps After Dental Trauma in Kids

Dental trauma in children can happen suddenly — during sports, playtime, falls, or accidents. Knowing what to do in the first few minutes can make a big difference in saving your child’s tooth and preventing long-term problems.

1. Stay Calm and Comfort Your Child
Your calm presence will help your child feel reassured. Check for other injuries first, especially if there was a head impact, before focusing on the mouth.

2. Stop the Bleeding
If there’s bleeding, gently rinse the mouth with clean water. Apply gentle pressure with a clean gauze or soft cloth to the affected area until bleeding stops.

3. Locate the Tooth or Fragment
If a permanent tooth has been completely knocked out (avulsed), pick it up by the crown (the white part), not the root. Avoid scrubbing it. If dirty, gently rinse with milk or saline — not tap water.

4. Reposition or Store the Tooth
If possible, gently place the tooth back in its socket and have your child bite down softly on a cloth to hold it in place. If that’s not possible, store it in a small container of milk, saline, or your child’s saliva. Do not wrap it in tissue or let it dry out.

5. Seek Immediate Dental Care
Contact your pediatric dentist right away. Time is critical — for knocked-out permanent teeth, replanting within 30 minutes offers the best chance of survival.

6. Manage Pain and Swelling
Use a cold compress outside the mouth to reduce swelling. Over-the-counter pain relief (as advised by your dentist or pediatrician) may be given.

FAQ

If a permanent tooth is completely knocked out, act fast:

  • Pick it up by the crown (not the root)

  • Do not scrub or wash the tooth with soap

  • Try to place it back in the socket if possible, or store it in cold milk or the child’s saliva

  • Rush to the dentist within 30 minutes for the best chance of saving the tooth

Baby teeth are not reinserted if knocked out—but you still need a dental visit to check for other injuries.
